UAE Experience Certificates — Complete Guide
What is an experience certificate?
An experience certificate — also called an experience letter or service certificate — is a formal document issued by an employer that confirms an employee's role, tenure, key responsibilities and professional conduct. It is one of the most widely requested HR documents in the UAE and is commonly used for new job applications, visa endorsements, embassy attestation and professional licensing.
Is an experience certificate required in the UAE?
Under UAE Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Employment Relationships, employees are entitled to receive a service certificate from their employer on request, confirming the joining and end dates, last position and last salary — and without including any statement that could harm the employee's future employment. Similar entitlements exist across the GCC, including Article 64 of the Saudi Labour Law.
What information should an experience certificate include?
- Company letterhead — name, trade licence, MOHRE / HRSD registration and address
- Employee's full legal name, passport / Emirates ID and nationality (optional)
- Job title, department and reporting structure
- Employment start and end dates, and total duration of service
- Key responsibilities, achievements and professional conduct
- Optional: salary, reason for leaving, rehire eligibility, notice period
- Authorised signatory, designation, signature and company stamp
Difference between an experience certificate and an employment certificate
An employment certificate is typically issued during active employment to confirm that the employee currently works with the company — often for banks, embassies or visa applications. An experience certificate is issued at the end of the employment relationship and documents the full history of the role, responsibilities and conduct. Many UAE employers issue both a relieving letter and an experience certificate on final settlement.
When is attestation required?
Attestation is typically required when the experience certificate will be used outside the UAE — for overseas employment, immigration, professional licensing in another country, or educational admissions abroad. The usual chain is: notarisation → UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) attestation → attestation by the destination country's embassy. Some destinations also require legal translation between English and Arabic before attestation.

What an experience letter must confirm
An experience letter is an employer's written confirmation of somebody's service history. A future employer reads it to verify that the role and the dates on a CV are real; a licensing body reads it to count qualifying years; a visa officer reads it to establish continuous employment. Everything hinges on four facts being unambiguous — the employee's full legal name, the exact job title held, the joining and last working dates, and the duties actually performed.
The conduct sentence carries more weight than most people expect. A neutral statement that the employee's performance and conduct were satisfactory, and that they left on their own initiative or on completion of contract, is what receiving parties look for. Vague praise adds nothing; anything negative belongs in internal records, not in a certificate the employee will present for years.
This maker keeps the letter on your own stationery. Add the company letterhead, licence details and address, fill in the employee's particulars, edit the responsibilities paragraph to reflect their real scope, then place the authorised signatory's name, designation, signature line and company stamp. Arabic and bilingual layouts are available for letters heading to a ministry, an embassy or an attestation agent — where a certified translation alongside the English original is usually expected.
- Company letterhead, trade licence details and issue date
- Employee full name, passport or Emirates ID reference, position and department
- Joining date, last working date and total duration served
- Editable responsibilities summary and neutral conduct statement
- Authorised signatory block with designation, signature line and stamp space
- English, Arabic and bilingual layouts with Word and PDF export
How to get an experience certificate in the UAE
In the UAE the certificate is issued by the employer, not by a government office. Where it is going next decides whether it also needs attestation.
- 1
Ask your employer's HR department
The employer issues the certificate on company letterhead. There is no MOHRE counter that produces one — MOHRE only holds the labour contract and the cancellation record.
- 2
Check the details against your passport
Name spelling, job title and the joining and last working dates must match the labour contract and the passport, or an attestation agent will reject the document.
- 3
Have it signed and stamped
An authorised signatory signs it and the company stamp is applied. An unsigned or unstamped letter has no value outside the company.
- 4
Decide whether attestation is needed
For a new job inside the UAE the signed original is normally enough. For a licensing body, an equivalency application or use abroad it must be legalised.
- 5
Notarise and legalise for overseas use
The usual chain is a UAE notary, then the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then the destination country's embassy — plus a certified Arabic translation where the receiving authority requires one.
Experience certificate UAE — common questions
Who issues an experience certificate in the UAE?+
Your employer does. It is a company document issued on letterhead and signed by an authorised signatory. No UAE government department issues experience certificates on an employee's behalf.
Is an employer obliged to give me one?+
UAE practice is that an employer provides a service certificate on request at the end of employment, stating the period served and the role held. It should be factual and must not be used to disadvantage the employee.
Does an experience certificate need MOFA attestation?+
Only when it will be relied on outside the company — engineering or medical licensing, degree-equivalency files, or use in another country. Notary, then Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then the destination embassy.
Should the certificate be in Arabic or English?+
English is accepted by most UAE employers and free zones. Ministries, courts and embassies usually want Arabic or a bilingual version, which is why bilingual layouts are included here.
Should salary be shown on it?+
No. Salary belongs on a salary certificate. Mixing the two makes the letter harder to reuse and exposes pay information you may not want disclosed.
Can it be issued while the employee is still working?+
Yes, but then it is an employment verification letter — it confirms current service with no end date. Use the verification letter tool for that and keep the experience certificate for after the last working day.
