Write a CV that gets read past the first screen

A CV has one job: to make a recruiter decide, in the twenty seconds they give it, that you are worth a call. That decision is made on the top third of the first page — your target job title, a three-line summary of what you do, and your most recent role. Everything else supports the claim you make there. Long paragraphs, decorative graphics and a skills bar chart do not help; a clear title, dated roles with no unexplained gaps, and achievements expressed as numbers do.

Each template here uses a single-column, standard-heading structure so applicant tracking systems can read it. When a recruitment agency uploads your CV, the software looks for recognisable section names — Experience, Education, Skills — and dated entries in reverse-chronological order. Anything hidden in a text box or a column layout is often dropped, which is why a beautiful CV can silently fail a screening it should have passed.

There are a few regional details worth getting right. Employers across the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar routinely ask for nationality, current visa or sponsorship status and notice period, so put them where they can be found rather than making a recruiter chase them. A plain professional headshot is normal here. Tailor the summary and the skills list to each application; the fastest way is to save one master CV and duplicate it per role.

  • Reverse-chronological layout with clear Experience, Education and Skills sections
  • Professional summary and target job title at the top of page one
  • Space for nationality, visa status, notice period and languages
  • Achievement bullets rather than duty lists, with room for figures
  • ATS-readable single-column templates that survive recruiter upload
  • Autosaves as you type, and a free PDF download with no watermark

Frequently asked questions

What CV format do UAE employers prefer?+

UAE and wider GCC recruiters prefer a clean reverse-chronological CV of one to two pages: a short professional summary, then work experience with measurable achievements, education, certifications and skills. Include your nationality, visa status and notice period, as these are commonly requested.

Should I add a photo to my CV in the GCC?+

A photo is common and generally accepted in the GCC, unlike in the UK or US. Keep it a plain professional headshot, and leave it out if the employer's application system asks for an anonymous CV.

Is this CV ATS-friendly?+

Yes. The layout uses a single column, standard section headings and plain text, so applicant tracking systems used by GCC employers and recruitment agencies can parse it correctly.

Is the CV maker free?+

Yes. Choosing a template, editing every section and downloading the PDF are free — there is no paywall at download. A Pro plan only adds unlimited saved documents, so you can keep several tailored CV versions in your DocMak dashboard.

Which CV template should a fresh graduate in the UAE use?+

Use the Fresh Graduate CV template. It leads with education, then internships, university projects and activities, and keeps space to state your visa status, which most UAE graduate schemes ask for during first screening.

How long should a CV be for a Dubai job application?+

Two pages is the practical maximum for most roles in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and one page is enough for graduates and candidates with under five years of experience. Executive candidates can run to two full pages if the first page carries the leadership summary.

Do I need a separate CV for Saudi Arabia or Qatar?+

The structure is the same across the GCC, but tailor the detail: Saudi employers often expect Saudisation status and SOCPA or professional registration where relevant, while Qatari employers frequently ask for NOC availability and current sponsor details. You can duplicate your DocMak CV and adjust those lines per country.
