A bill of lading is issued and signed by the carrier or its agent. This tool prepares the particulars for issue and is not itself a contract of carriage.

Bill of lading explained

Bill of lading particulars, prepared correctly the first time

The bill of lading is the most consequential document in a shipment: it is a receipt, evidence of the carriage contract and, when issued to order, the key to the cargo. Errors in the consignee, notify party, freight terms or number of originals cost amendment fees and can delay release at destination.

This maker sets out the standard fields — parties, vessel and voyage, ports, marks and numbers, packages and description, gross weight and measurement, freight terms, place and date of issue — so you hand the carrier or forwarder a clean draft. Traders and NVOCC operators across the UAE and GCC use it alongside their shipping instruction.

  • Shipper, consignee and notify-party blocks in standard B/L layout
  • Vessel, voyage, port of loading, port of discharge and delivery place
  • Cargo particulars with marks, packages, description, weight and measurement
  • Freight prepaid or collect, place and date of issue, originals issued
  • Carrier and shipper signature areas plus branded PDF export

  4. 4

    Set freight terms and originals

State freight prepaid or collect, place and date of issue, and the number of original bills issued.

Frequently asked questions

What is a bill of lading?+

A bill of lading is the carrier's document for a shipment. It acts as a receipt for the goods, evidence of the contract of carriage, and — when issued to order — a document of title, meaning whoever holds the endorsed original can claim the cargo.

Can I issue my own bill of lading?+

A carrier or its agent issues the master bill of lading; freight forwarders issue house bills. Shippers and NVOCC operators commonly draft the document for the issuing party to check and sign, which is what this maker is for — prepare the particulars, then have the carrier or forwarder issue and sign.

What is the difference between a bill of lading and a sea waybill?+

A bill of lading can be a document of title and is often required under a letter of credit, so originals must travel or be released against payment. A sea waybill is not a title document: the named consignee simply identifies itself at destination, which is faster but gives the shipper less control.

Why does the number of originals matter?+

Cargo is released against a surrendered original. If three originals are issued, any one of them can obtain the goods, so shippers holding cargo against payment must control every original until the buyer pays.
