A certificate of analysis is the batch-level proof that goods meet their specification. Its usefulness depends on structure: parameter, specification limit, actual result, unit, method, and a clear pass or fail. Combined with a lot number and manufacturing and expiry dates, it lets a buyer, an auditor or an import authority trace the material back to the exact production run.
Manufacturers, blenders and distributors of chemicals, lubricants, food ingredients and cosmetics in the UAE and GCC issue one with every batch, alongside the safety data sheet and shipment documents.

How to issue a certificate of analysis
- 1
Identify product, batch and dates
Give the product name, batch or lot number, manufacturing date, expiry or retest date and quantity released.
- 2
List each test parameter
One row per parameter with the specification limit, the actual result, the unit and the test method used.
- 3
Mark the conformity of each result
Show pass or fail against the limit so a reviewer can scan the column rather than compare numbers.
- 4
Sign the release statement
The authorised analyst or QC manager signs, then the certificate travels with the shipment documents.
Frequently asked questions
What is a certificate of analysis?+
A certificate of analysis is a quality document showing that a specific batch of product was tested against its specification and what results were obtained. It lists each parameter, the specification limit, the actual result, the test method, and a signed statement releasing the batch.
Who needs a COA?+
Buyers of chemicals, food ingredients, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, lubricants and industrial materials commonly require one per batch. Customs and food or health authorities in several GCC markets also ask for a COA on import for regulated product categories.
How is a COA different from a product data sheet?+
A product data sheet describes the product in general — typical properties, applications, packaging. A certificate of analysis is batch-specific: it reports what the tests actually returned for the material being shipped, with dates and a lot number.
Should the COA reference test methods?+
Yes. Naming the method — an ASTM, ISO or in-house method number — lets the customer reproduce the test and makes results comparable. A result without a method is difficult to challenge or verify.
